Dr. Mary DeRaedt, Clinical Assistant Professor of Counseling, was interviewed by WUSA9 on the new "FAFO" parenting style that practices a "tough love" approach. The concept is to let children feel the negative consequences of their actions when they don't listen to clear warnings or rules. Dr. DeRaedt explains this approach is a rebound reaction to the "gentle parenting" trend. She explains that balance and reason are the key when it comes to addressing these situations in parenting. If a child simply refuses to wear a coat, there's no danger in letting them get cold until they decide a coat would be a better choice. But if your child is acting in a manner that will endanger their health or have other lasting consequences, it is important to enforce the boundaries needed for safety. Dr. DeRaedt stated,"Children need to feel a little discomfort, they learn from that...We get stronger when we encounter challenges." She adds, "Having opportunities for children to learn bravery instead of just always being safe is what this approach to parenting is really focusing on." The hosts ask if there's an age range that's more appropriate for this parenting style, and Dr. DeRaedt cautions that consequences can become more intense as children become teenagers, so this technique might be better suited for younger children, again, depending on the situation at hand.
