GSEHD student Captain Catherine Grizzle (Master's, Organizational Leadership and Learning) has been selected to be a Military Mentor for the United States Senate Youth Program's (USSYP) Washington Week 2024. Seventeen officers are selected as Military Mentors each year by the Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs through a competitive candidate review process. Participation in this prestigious program provides military officers like Captain Grizzle the opportunity to exercise their leadership skills while mentoring our nation’s next generation of elected and appointed public servants. The high school students who are selected for USSYP as delegates (two from each state) come to Washington, D.C. to hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials from the Departments of State and Defense and directors of other federal agencies, as well as to participate in meetings with the President and a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

“We represented the Department of Defense and led these exceptional delegates through the week, setting expectations and offering mentorship,” she said. “But we’re not there for just Washington Week; we’re there for them for life. So wherever they go and whatever path in life they choose, we’re there for them.”
Grizzle graduated this month with her master’s in organizational leadership and learning. She said the skills she learned in her program will help her on her next mission as an instructor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
“My time at GW has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to lead and inspire future generations of cadets,” she said. “I’m excited to continue my journey of mentorship and leadership at such a prestigious institution.”
