About Dr. Das' Talk

Feminist theory frames the experience of sexual violence as that of power and the social messages that the survivor receives. For South Asian women in the US, a survivor’s experience of their assault is fraught with conflicting discourses around sexual violence and support seeking. These messages are dynamic, influenced by the dominant discourses in South Asian and Western culture and continually changing with acculturation and enculturation. Western counseling practices have yet to understand the complexities of this experience. Therefore, it is critical to understand the cultural discourses, informal support seeking practices, and survivor experiences to inform future counseling practice and research.

Dr. Bagmi Das will review two studies conducted to better understand support seeking after sexual violence. Attendees will learn about cultural influences, coping behavior, and the support seeking experience for South Asian women survivors of sexual violence in the US.
