GSEHD alumnus Dr. Jared Cotton (master’s and EdD in Educational Leadership and Administration) has been appointed to lead the University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development’s K–12 Advisory Council.
Established in 2001, the UVA K–12 Advisory Council is a signature outreach partnership that fosters sustained relationships between the university and school divisions across Virginia. The council supports the continuing professional development of K–12 educators and serves as a forum for collaboration between practitioners and higher education leaders.
Dr. Cotton brings extensive experience in educational leadership to the role. Most recently, he announced his retirement as superintendent of Chesapeake Public Schools, a position he held for eight years. During his tenure, he led one of Virginia’s largest school divisions and earned a reputation for advancing student achievement, strengthening community partnerships, and supporting educators.
As chair of the advisory council, Dr. Cotton will help guide efforts to connect research and practice, strengthen partnerships between schools and the university, and address emerging opportunities and challenges in K–12 education.
His appointment reflects a distinguished career dedicated to public education and highlights the impact of GSEHD alumni in shaping educational leadership at the local, state, and national levels. Through this new role, Dr. Cotton will continue to support educators and school systems across Virginia while helping to prepare the next generation of education leaders.
