GSEHD faculty member Dr. Laura Engel collaborated with UNESCO to coordinate, write, and edit the UNESCO Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development: An Implementation Guide, a key resource designed to help countries put a landmark international education framework into practice.

Published in 2025, the implementation guide is the first in a planned series of tools supporting the rollout of UNESCO’s 2023 Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development. Adopted unanimously by all 194 UNESCO member states, the Recommendation provides a global roadmap for how education systems can promote peace, human rights, sustainability, and human development. The guide offers practical strategies for translating these commitments into policy and practice at national and local levels.

Dr. Engel’s contributions drew on her expertise in comparative and international education, global citizenship education, and international education policy. Through her work with UNESCO, she helped develop a resource that will support educators, policymakers, and government leaders around the world as they work to strengthen education’s role in addressing global challenges.

The publication represents a significant milestone in advancing international cooperation in education and reflects UNESCO’s commitment to ensuring that learners are equipped with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to contribute to a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world.

Dr. Engel’s leadership on this project highlights GSEHD’s impact on global education policy and its contributions to international efforts that shape the future of teaching and learning worldwide.
