Fall 2024 Greetings from Dean Michael Feuer
Dear GSEHD Students, Faculty, and Staff,
As we begin the school year, I extend a heartfelt welcome to each of you. Whether you are joining us for the first time or returning after the summer break, we are excited to embark on this academic journey together. As a school of education and human development, back-to-school time holds that special sense of potential and promise for us.
This semester unfolds during a time of great transition—at our university, in our American political system, and around the globe. This fall, the university will announce the next phase of its strategic framework, to help guide GW’s trajectory in the coming years. Additionally, we are in the final stretch of a presidential election, and the world continues to be in a state of turmoil. Times like these stir deep emotions, and I remind us all about the importance of compassion, dialogue, and understanding in our work and daily interactions.
In her welcome message to the GW Community, President Granberg addressed this idea of productive and respectful engagement. She shared GW’s commitment to fostering a safe campus environment, respecting the GW’s community’s right to free expression, and maintaining the operation of our education and research programs with minimal interruption–responsibilities which can sometimes be at odds with each other. You can learn more about how the university is balancing these goals in GW’s Plan to Strengthen our Community.
In our roles as educators, learners, and human development professionals, we have the opportunity to foster resilience, empathy, and informed engagement both within our school and in the wider world. While we do our work, let’s remember the transformative power of education—to inspire hope, promote change, and build stronger communities.
Here’s to a semester of supporting one another, approaching challenges with determination and kindness, and staying focused on our shared mission. My best wishes for an inspiring and successful fall semester.
Warm regards,
Michael Feuer, Dean
