Dr. Andrew Sonn is a graduate of GW’s Higher Education Administration Program and has worked in Student Affairs, mainly in the housing and residence life areas, for 25 years. He arrived at GW in 1999 and worked as the housing director for 5 years. Since 2004, Dr. Sonn has worked in GW’s Division of Student Affairs, most recently as the Assistant Dean of Students. In this position, he has helped implement a number of divisional and cross-divisional projects relating to improving student and business services at the University, including founding GW’s Office of Veteran Services, managing the division’s professional development and fundraising activities, overseeing parent and international student services, and most recently leading GW’s student support unit for military and first generation students, basic needs support, case management, and health education. He has also served as a Community Director and a graduate assistant in University of Maryland’s Department of Residence Life and as a housing staff member at Georgetown University.

Hailing from New Jersey, Dr. Sonn earned a B.A. in History from Gettysburg College, an M.A. in 19th century U.S. Social and Cultural History with a Minor in African History from the University of Maryland at College Park, and an Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration from the George Washington University. His dissertation, entitled “Institutions‘ Needs and Donors‘ Dreams: A Case Study of Successful Student Affairs Fundraising Collaboration at Three Private Research Universities,” focuses on higher education fundraising in support of student affairs initiatives, programs, and facilities. His professional and research interests include higher education leadership, assessment in higher education, staff training and development, continuous improvement models applied to higher education, and student veteran transitional issues.
