GSEHD Elementary Education student Isabel Scrabis was named as the first place winner of the 2020 John Horrworth Children’s Book Award for her book Alina the Ballerina.
Per the book description: Moving is never easy. Especially not when you’re eight years old. When Alina and her family move to America from Russia, she struggles to navigate the language barrier in order to make friends and do well in school. Just when all hope seems lost, Alina discovers that sometimes language doesn’t need to be spoken, and your passions can lead you “home.”
Katie Miller won second place for her book My Superability.
An honorable mention was awarded to Erica Collins, from the MA Curriculum & Instruction Program, Elementary Concentration, for Let Us Save the World.
Recipients were announced on May 15 at the Children's Literature book contest judging. Three judges used virtual platforms to watch and listen to student contestants read their original children's books.
Kim Sloan, instructor for the program’s Children's Literature course, conducted the children's book writing project, which culminates in this annual competition with awards determined by a panel of judges. The winner receives $500, the second place winner receives $300, and honorable mentions receive $100 each.
