Dr. Mary DeRaedt, clinical mental health expert and GSEHD professor, recently joined a panel of comedians and a fellow mental health professional at the Kennedy Center for Traumedy by Rola Z: A Comedy Showcase for Catharsis. The event explored how humor can be a powerful tool in processing trauma and promoting mental wellness.
As part of the evening’s Q&A panel, Dr. DeRaedt offered insights into the therapeutic role of comedy, discussing how laughter can foster resilience and open the door to healing. The event featured Lebanese comedian Rola Z, creator of the Traumedy Festival: Turning Pain into Punchlines and the Funny Arabs stand-up series, both of which spotlight comedy as a vehicle for emotional expression and empowerment.
Dr. DeRaedt also interviewed Rola Z as part of her Cares for Creatives program and recently welcomed her into the classroom to present a special session for students in CNSL 6174: Trauma and Crisis Intervention. Together, they shared how finding “the funny in your story” can help individuals move through pain with courage and creativity.
