book cover: Seeds of Culture by Dan Bredeson

GSEHD alumnus Dan Bredeson (master's, Organizational Leadership and Learning) has written a new book, Seeds of Culture: Improve Organizational Performance by Growing a Culture of Commitment, which will be released on October 10, 2023.

Mr. Bredeson, who grew up on a farm, demonstrates and acknowledges the organic nature of culture, emphasizing the importance of cultivating it rather than constructing it. In the book, he combines his years of leadership experience with academic research, and then looks at it through the lens of his rural upbringing to offer a new paradigm for organizational culture.

Mr. Bredeson said that his book would not be possible without the time he spent in the OLL program. Read the press release >

Per the book description:

In Seeds of Culture, Bredeson shares:

  • How an organization’s culture affects performance
  • The six traits of successful “culture farmers” (i.e., leaders)
  • The seven “seeds” that will grow into a culture of commitment
  • How leaders should cultivate those seeds throughout their life cycle.

Bredeson's writing shows leaders how to effectively improve performance by growing a culture of commitment — not compliance. This fresh outlook creates a community where team members show up, work hard, and care about each other and the organization. Workplace performance improves when members of the organization go the extra mile because they want to, not because they have to, says Bredeson.
