PhD in Education Colloquium: Meaningless Citizenship

Iraqi Refugees and the Welfare State featuring Dr. Sally Bonet
Wed, 5 April, 2023 7:30pm - 9:00pm
cover of Meaningless Citizenship book by Sally Wesley Bonet

Join Dr. Sally Bonet for a discussion of her book, Meaningless Citizenship, an in-depth ethnography of recently resettled Iraqi refugees in Philadelphia. Dr. Bonet’s work demonstrates how encounters with critical institutions of the state—including public schooling, resettlement programs, healthcare, and public assistance—are an inherently educative process for both refugee youths and adults, teaching about the types of citizenship they are expected to enact and embody while simultaneously shaping them into laboring subjects in service of neoliberal capitalism.

This event as co-sponsored by GSEHD's Ph.D. concentrations in Education & Inequality and Comparative & International Education.
