GSEHD faculty member Dr. Maggie Parker recently presented at the Association for Play Therapy annual conference and was recognized with the organization's Outstanding Service Award, honoring significant contributions to the field of play therapy.
Dr. Parker's presentation, "The Duality of Mothers: Examining the Roles of Mother and Play Therapist," was co-presented with Dr. Kara Carnes-Holt. The session explored an often-overlooked topic within the profession: the intersection of motherhood and play therapy practice. While many play therapists are women and many become mothers during their careers, the presenters noted that relatively few training programs or supervisory models address how these roles influence one another.
The presentation examined ways that the dual identities of mother and play therapist can inform clinical work, as well as important considerations for practitioners and supervisors. Drawing on multiple theoretical perspectives, the session encouraged participants to reflect on how personal and professional experiences shape therapeutic relationships, decision-making, and professional development.
In addition to presenting at the conference, Dr. Parker received the Outstanding Service Award, recognizing her dedication and contributions to the play therapy profession. The award highlights her longstanding commitment to advancing the field through scholarship, clinical practice, professional service, and the preparation of future counselors and play therapists.
Dr. Parker’s work continues to contribute to conversations about professional identity, supervision, and the evolving practice of play therapy.
