GSEHD alumnus Michael Burch (Post-Master’s Certificate in Educational Leadership and Administration) has been named Principal of Alexandria City High School (ACHS), effective July 1, 2026.
A longtime administrator with Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), Burch brings more than a decade of leadership experience within the district and more than 30 years in education overall. His career with ACPS began in 2010, and he has since served in a range of roles at ACHS, including assistant principal, testing coordinator, summer school administrator, assistant athletic director, and teacher. Most recently, he has led operations and student support across the school’s four campuses.
During his tenure, Burch has played a key role in major systemwide initiatives, including launching the Minnie Howard campus, implementing the school’s academy model, and developing the master schedule that supported instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also coordinated the school improvement plan across ACHS’s multi-campus structure, serving a student population of roughly 4,500.
As principal, Burch will lead the largest high school in Virginia at a time of transition and renewal. In remarks to the school community, he emphasized collaboration, consistency, and a strong focus on student success, noting the importance of building relationships and ensuring every student’s voice is heard.
Burch earned his post-master’s certificate in educational leadership from GSEHD, equipping him with the leadership expertise to guide large, complex school systems. His appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Alexandria City High School and reflects his commitment to fostering inclusive, student-centered learning environments.
