GSEHD alumnus Dr. Shawn Joseph (EdD in Educational Administration and Policy Studies) has been named superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), one of the nation’s largest school districts.
Dr. Joseph has been serving as interim superintendent since June 2025 and was selected following a competitive national search process. County leadership highlighted his strong performance during the search and his ability to engage effectively with educators, families, and the broader community.
With a career spanning teaching, school leadership, and district administration, Dr. Joseph brings extensive experience to the role. He has previously served as superintendent in multiple districts and as a professor of educational leadership, while also mentoring aspiring school leaders nationwide.
During his tenure as interim superintendent, Dr. Joseph has already made an impact, including advancing efforts to strengthen teacher recruitment and retention. Under his leadership, staffing vacancies in the district have declined significantly, reflecting a focus on improving working conditions and supporting educators.
Looking ahead, Dr. Joseph has emphasized student achievement—particularly literacy—as a central priority, alongside ongoing investments in professional development and instructional support for teachers.
