GSEHD student Jane Brennan, enrolled in the Elementary Education program, has been named the winner of the 2026 John Horrworth Children’s Book Award following the program’s annual children’s literature competition.
Brennan earned top honors for her original book Tessa’s Toolbox, which was selected by a panel of five judges who evaluated entries through virtual presentations. As part of the competition, student authors read their original works aloud, showcasing both their storytelling and presentation skills.
The competition is a signature component of the Children’s Literature course, led by GSEHD faculty members Bryan Powell and Sarah Buscher. The course challenges students to develop and illustrate their own children’s books, blending creativity with best practices in literacy instruction and child development.
Second place was awarded to student Jaden Xiao, 2026 graduate of the Elementary Education program, for her book, Deep Water. Winners received monetary prizes, with Brennan awarded $500 and Xiao receiving $300.
The annual contest highlights the creativity and dedication of GSEHD students while reinforcing the importance of engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate literature in elementary education. Brennan’s recognition reflects the program’s commitment to preparing future educators who can inspire young readers through meaningful storytelling.
