Black Taxes: African American Doctoral Students Experiencing Tokenism at Predominantly White Institutions

Ecology of Education featuring Dr. Deniece Dortch
Wed, 23 March, 2022 4:00pm - 5:15pm
Dr. Deniece Dortch stands next to shelfs full of books.

Join Dr. Deniece Dortch as she underscores the societal charges placed on African Americans in order for them to enter and participate at predominately white institutions (PWIs). By taking a deep dive into the ways in which students are racially tokenized (i.e., diversity spokesperson, diversity prop, and moral compass), the audience begins to understand the nuanced ways in which students are subjected to the hidden costs of admission.

Dr. Dortch’s lecture critically and carefully discusses the interplay of each element as they are significant factors to understanding the collective costs of tokenism, its effects on this population and how it ultimately undermines institutional goals toward racial inclusion.

Open to everyone.
