Natalie B. Milman, Ph.D. is Associate Dean of the George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development’s Office of Student Life and Professor of Educational Technology Leadership. She is also a member of the interdisciplinary Human-Technology Collaboration PhD program and research lab, a member of GW’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers, and winner of the 2017 Bender Teaching Award. Her research focuses on the design of instruction and models for the effective leadership and integration of technology at all academic levels; online student support needs, engagement, and learning; issues of diversity, inclusion, and digital equity; and the use of digital portfolios for professional development.

She serves as the co-editor of the Current Practice Section of "Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education" and has published numerous journal articles, including in "Computers in the Schools," "Journal of Research on Technology and Education," "Journal of Technology and Teacher Education," "Online Learning," and the "Quarterly Review of Distance Education." She presents frequently at conferences and has co-authored several book chapters and books.

Dr. Milman earned a doctorate in Instructional Technology from the University of Virginia’s School of Education and Human Development with a graduate specialization designed to prepare technology leaders. She began her career in education as a second grade, science specialist, mentor, and technology teacher in Los Angeles County, California. She has taught at the graduate school level since 1997 and online since 2001. She is fluent in Spanish, a first-generation Colombian-American, and a first-gen BA, MA, and PHD graduate.

  • December 2023Dr. Natalie Milman and Ph.D. student Karly Ball (Education and Inequality CRT) co-authored, "Navigating online coursework with a disability: Tips for students," in the journal Distance Learning (Volume 20, #3).
  • December 2023Dr. Natalie Milman completed and received certification from the Center for AI and Digital Policy (CAIDP) Institute in Artificial Intelligence Policy. This program includes requirements for research, writing, and policy analysis. The Institute clinics are intensive, interdisciplinary, semester-long courses, established to teach future leaders in the AI policy field skills in policy analysis, research, evaluation, team management, and policy formation. Topics covered include AI History, AI Issues and Institutions, AI Regulation and Policy Frameworks, and Research Methods.
  • October 2023Drs. Ryan WatkinsNatalie Milman, and Michael Corry published a chapter which they co-authored titled, "Lifelong learning as a learning and instructional design technology professional," in the book Becoming a learning and instructional design technology (LIDT) professional.
  • October 2023 - Ideas from Dr. Natalie Milman's article, "Differentiated Learning and Technology: A Powerful Combination," were discussed in two episodes of the Digital Learning Radio podcast. Hosts Laura Kile and Katherine Laster shared Dr. Milman's 4 E model in last week's episode, Inspired by Transformative Learning with Technology as well as the next episode to be released on 10/5/2023.
  • July 2023Dr. Natalie Milman gave a Master Class Lecture entitled, Ethical Considerations of Artificial Intelligence (AI), to this year's Caminos Al Futuro scholars. Caminos Al Futuro is GW's fully-funded, selective pre-college and residential summer program for rising seniors in U.S. high schools offered by GW's Cisneros Hispanic Leadership Institute. Typical candidates have a record of outstanding academic ability and a demonstrated commitment to service and leadership within the Hispanic/Latino community.
  • July 2023 Dr. Natalie Milman, along with Dr. Gina Adam and Dr. Hurriyet Ok from GW's SEAS and GSEHD PhD student Ani Meliksetyan (Human-Technology Collaboration) with additional SEAS students, presented Work in Progress paper, "Using virtual reality cleanroom simulation in a mixed nanoelectronics classroom," at the American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference and Exposition, Baltimore, MD. This presentation paper was included in the Conference Proceedings as well.
  • June 2023Dr. Natalie Milman published the article, "Differentiated Learning and Technology: A Powerful Combination," with Dr. Clare Kilbane from the University of Notre Dame in a special ASCD-ISTE co-branded issue which explores ways schools can use technology to redefine and enrich learning in the aftermath of the pandemic.
    • January 2024 Update: This article was listed as one of Educational Leadership magazine's top 10 most popular articles of 2023. The piece was also the most downloaded article from the Summer 2023 issue of Educational Leadership.
  • June 2023Dr. Natalie Milman is the International Society of Technology in Education's 2023 ISTELive23 Conference Research Paper Chairperson and is presenting at ISTELive23 conference in Philadelphia this week. She is an invited panelist for the Deepening Learning with Technology: An EL Magazine Panel (about her article) and is doing a research paper presentation on Trends and Analysis of ISTELive23 Research Papers.
  • April 2023 - Dr. Natalie Milman was a guest on the education podcast, In Conversation with Stephen Hurley. The episode is titled, "Confronting Tools of the Oppressor with Drs. Marie Heath, Natalie Milman and Sumreen Asim." In the conversation, they discussed how power, privilege, and prejudice are embedded within technologies.
