Soundscape: Jews and Music

This interdisciplinary seminar explores the relationship between music and the modern Jewish experience. Drawing on and weaving together history and ethnomusicology, it looks at a wide range of Jewish musical expression, from liturgy to popular music, and the equally wide range of contexts in which it appears, from the sanctuary to the concert hall and the campfire. In addition to reading about and listening to music, students will have the opportunity to meet contemporary Jewish musicians and to attend several concerts.
