Design of Adult Learning Interventions

Designing and implementing adult learning programs. Topics include instructional design techniques, designing effective programs, program planning and marketing techniques, and conducting needs assessments and evaluations of adult learning programs.

Learning Objectives
What makes for an effective adult learning activity (or intervention)?  How can learning be constructed in such a way that it is meaningful to participants, achieves individual and organizational outcomes, and improves performance? What does a successful learning intervention look like, and how do we know whether success is achieved? How can diverse participants be encouraged to learn at work (Illeris, 2011)?

The purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to plan, design, develop, implement, and evaluate adult learning interventions (materials, courses, curricula, programs). Delivery settings vary widely, such as via classrooms, clinics, organizations, simulation sites, laboratories, and other learning environments.

  • Discuss the major components of the systems approach to instructional design – analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Apply instructional models to assess, evaluate, and refine learning interventions, based on an identified performance problem or learning gap.
  • Design an effective learning intervention within a chosen professional context, using an identified instructional design process.
  • Explain the relationship between student learning and curriculum characteristics with respect to competencies, learning styles, and learner needs.
  • Apply analysis to a research project and be able to present findings in a graduate level/ professional manner.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and develop public speaking abilities.
