Global Leadership

There is a compelling set of underlying trends that drives the current focus on global leadership (Gundling, Hogan, and Cvitkovich, 2011). In this age of knowledge workers and virtual teams, a border-less economy and free agents, the rules have changed. The days of the big leader – Churchill or Kennedy, even Gates or Welch – may be numbered. The explosion of free markets worldwide, the unparalleled access to knowledge through the Internet, the democratization of regimes, and the flattening of organizational hierarchies give ordinary people the opportunity to express leadership like never before. A shrinking world and the cyber age call for a new kind of leadership – but what kind? What does it mean to be a leader under globalization?

This class explores these questions both in theory and practice. Assignments are designed for learning and applying theory, but also for thrusting students – the next generation of leaders – into the act of leading. This course introduces students to the changes taking place in organizations due to the process of globalization and the requirements for leaderships. The focus is on many types of organizations including corporations, non-governmental organizations (NGO) and intergovernmental organizations (IGO). Of critical concern are the changes in organizational strategy, cultural concerns and a mindset change that must be implemented in multicultural contexts. Particular attention will be paid to the role of the leader. The thrust of this course is developing an understanding of the changing global environment, how those changes influence operational and strategic issues within global organizations and how you as a global leader can better understand the global environment to help organizations meet these new challenges.
