Inquiry Tools Supporting Improvement Science

This course explores how Improvement Science utilizes and adapts established qualitative and qualitative tools, processes, and methods from other professional fields. Students will examine and use a broad range of research methods and tools, with attention to understanding their unique purpose and appropriate use to support educator inquiry in IS, including common misconceptions. As we work in groups to utilize the improvement process, we will focus on honing our knowledge and skills of core IS tools, including the fishbone diagrams, empathy interviews, system maps, among others. Students will also benefit from a review of basic data collection and analysis procedures―e.g. interviewing, observation, conceptual maps, descriptive statistics, and data management―that provide a foundation for knowledge generation and building collective knowledge in schools.


Learning Outcomes
1. Understand the comparative value of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
2. Acquire the basic knowledge and skills to evaluate a range of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and methods
3. Utilize the research literature to understand and articulate what is known about problems of interest supporting
4. Utilize the research literature to identify and assess change strategies that may address your problem of interest
5. Develop some basic skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods
6. Understand and explain how basic quantitative and qualitative research methods inform the portfolio of tools and strategies in Improvement Science (e.g., run charts, fishbone diagrams, etc. )
7. Develop reflection and documentation skills to support improvement science inquiry through weekly journal entries, group work, and process notes
