Dr. Deniece Dortch underscored the societal charges placed on African Americans in order for them to enter and participate at predominately white institutions (PWIs). By taking a deep dive into the ways in which students are racially tokenized (i.e., diversity spokesperson, diversity prop, and moral compass), the audience begins to understand the nuanced ways in which students are subjected to the hidden costs of admission.

Dr. Dortch’s lecture critically and carefully discussed the interplay of each element as they are significant factors to understanding the collective costs of tokenism, its effects on this population and how it ultimately undermines institutional goals toward racial inclusion.
