School Counseling MA Program Mission The school counseling program is dedicated to the preparation of students to become knowledgeable and ethical counseling professionals for employment as school counselors in public and private schools and related educational settings for diverse populations. We endorse an integrated approach to school counseling with other school services. Our program contributes to human development, adjustment and change by encouraging our diverse faculty and student body to engage in reflective practice, innovative inquiry and responsible social action.
Experiential Education The course of studies includes classroom, laboratory and field site education and training. The program includes a two-semester internship. Interns deliver counseling services under supervision both in the program’s Community Counseling Services Center, a fully equipped training facility, and at schools in the community.
Accreditation The master’s program in school counseling is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), which is the nationally recognized agency for the accreditation of graduate programs in counseling. The master’s program in school counseling is approved by the State Education Agency-Board of Education of the District of Columbia and is part of the GSEHD unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
