An overview of the museum as an environment for learning, considering the influence of institutional history and organizational structure on the museum’s mission of serving the public.

Theory of and practice in the development of communication skills in the museum. Educational concepts; teaching strategies and techniques; institutional liaison and group process.

EDUC 223: Museum Audiences
A survey of the museum’s diverse audiences, emphasizing implications for effective programming, with attention to audience research.
Class frequency: One day/week, 2.5 hours/class.

EDUC 233: Supervised Experience in Education and Human Development Services
Two-day-a-week placement in area schools or other educational institutions. On-campus seminar focuses on the understanding of human development and learning theory as a framework for designing museum programming.
Class frequency: Class meets one day/week for 3 hours. Students spend two days/week at internship placement.

EDUC 233: Seminar and Internship in Museum Education
Four-day-a-week placement in education departments of area museums, supervised by GW faculty. On-campus seminar includes grant proposal writing.
Class frequency: Class meets one day/week for 3 hours. Students spend four days/week at internship placement.

EDUC 227: Museum Evaluation
Evaluation and research methods appropriate to the museum setting. Review of research on museum audiences; designing program and exhibit evaluations.
