School Counseling Master's Program Mission

The school counseling program is dedicated to the preparation of students to become knowledgeable and ethical counseling professionals for employment as school counselors in public and private schools and related educational settings for diverse populations. We endorse an integrated approach to school counseling with other school services. Our program contributes to human development, adjustment and change by encouraging our diverse faculty and student body to engage in reflective practice, innovative inquiry and responsible social action.

Experiential Education

The course of studies includes classroom, laboratory and field site education and training. The program includes a two-semester internship. Interns deliver counseling services under supervision both in the program’s Community Counseling Services Center, a fully equipped training facility, and at schools in the community.

Accreditation

The master’s program in school counseling is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), which is the nationally recognized agency for the accreditation of graduate programs in counseling. The master’s program in school counseling is approved by the State Education Agency-Board of Education of the District of Columbia and is part of the GSEHD unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Additional Program Information

Previous teaching experience is not required for admission to the school counseling program. Students who have no previous experience or academic work in elementary or secondary education may be required to select electives to meet deficiencies.

Admission Information for this Degree/Program

Spring, Summer and Fall Admit Available at the Main Campus. Alexandria is summer entry only. Applications must include two letters of recommendation, a 1-2 page statement of purpose, official transcripts from all institutions attended, a resume and Graduate Record Examination or Miller Analogies Test scores. To be admitted to the program, degree candidates must meet the admissions criteria established by the University, the School and the program. Applicants who are citizens of countries where English is not an official language are also required to submit either TOEFL or IELTS scores.

  • Fall: January 15 (Priority deadline to be considered for Main Campus Tuition Support) or March 1 (final deadline)
  • Spring: September 1

Tuition Support Information for this Degree/Program

GSEHD offers a limited number of tuition fellowships and support from endowment funds for on-campus students. All awards are merit-based. For additional information, contact the Office of Admissions.
