Professional Teaching Standards

Graduate Certificate
Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy

Mission and Program Outcomes

This program serves teachers who want to refine and expand their skills in order to become model teachers of excellence in their school communities. The coursework is designed to facilitate learning aligned with well-recognized propositions and standards of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and associated national content organizations.

This 15-credit graduate certificate aims to cultivate leadership skills and provide professional development for practicing teachers and counselors based upon the vision of accomplished teaching/ counseling as described in the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards' document What Teachers Should Know and Be Able To Do (1999). The graduate certificate in Professional Teaching Standards program has three purposes: to improve teaching/ counseling and student learning by increasing the number and diversity among teachers and counselors with National Board Certification; to establish a community of reflective practitioners among participants; and to instill a sense of the NBPTS process as a tool for deepening professional development and establishing professional communities within schools.
