As we enter into a new era of change and reform, opportunities for educators seeking leadership positions will be in high demand. A growing shortage of school-based professionals prepared to move into leadership positions in schools and school districts has led to increased opportunities for those with graduate and advanced degrees in educational leadership. To keep abreast of this expanding field, educators from across the US and international community are enhancing their credentials in preparation for their future leadership roles.
Since 1904, The George Washington University’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD) has been recognized as a premiere research institution providing our students with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to promote quality student achievement. Graduates of the Educational Leadership and Administration programs at The George Washington University will be ready to meet today’s challenges of school reform, growing school enrollments, and increasing retirements as our programs of study are designed to develop intellectual leaders who understand curriculum and instruction, motivate and support classroom professionals, and provide practical ideas necessary to lead vibrant educational communities.
Our expert program faculty-scholars, authors, and experienced educational leaders-and our highly qualified and equally as recognized adjunct faculty, bring to life the obstacles faced by educational administrators in today’s society. We invite you to explore our site and examine how the Educational Leadership and Administration program will help administrators meet the increasing needs and demands that await the 21st-century educator.
On behalf of the Educational Leadership and Administration program faculty,
Linda K. Lemasters, Ed.D., Program Coordinator.
The Educational Leadership and Administration program offers three advanced degrees and a post master’s certificate. Each program also prepares practitioners in administration or related careers for leadership roles as principals, mid-level administrators, instructional supervisors, superintendents, researchers and educators in national organizations and beyond. Additionally, each provides the coursework required for pursuit of administrative licensure in D.C., Virginia and many other states. The Educational Leadership and Administration program has five areas of programmatic focus:
Whether you seek a Master's, Education Specialist, Doctoral degree, or a post master’s certificate, the Educational Leadership and Administration vision of preparing leaders who will use disciplined inquiry to conceptualize research, and to evaluate and to implement appropriate advancements in educational theory and practice with the goal of promoting responsible leadership will be realized.
The Graduate School of Education and Human Development has maintained NCATE accreditation since 1954. The Educational Leadership and Administration program’s accreditation by NCATE indicates the program has met rigorous national standards in preparing teachers and other school specialists for the educational arena. Our leadership programs have also garnered national recognition from The Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC).
The program is offered in both the traditional face-to-face classroom format at three off-campus graduate centers and in an online delivery format.
