Bilingual Special Education

What is bilingual special education?

Bilingual special education is a rapidly growing field dedicated to understanding the continuum of needs presented by culturally and linguistically diverse students—those with exceptionalities and those without.  Graduate study in bilingual special education prepares teachers across roles to respond to changing demographics and to accurately identify their students’ needs and adapt instruction accordingly.   Teachers with training in this field are better able to respond to the diverse needs of the students currently in their classrooms, and are frequently able to use their expertise in leadership roles within their schools, district, and communities.

How will this program benefit me?

Graduates of bilingual special education programs will be able to:

  • appropriately instruct and assess culturally and linguistically diverse students;
  • address the language and literacy needs of culturally and linguistically diverse and/or exceptional students;
  • design services that match the learning styles and academic needs of students;
  • serve students in inclusive settings;work collaboratively with professional teams and families of these students;
  • identify and respond to legislative mandates, as well as current issues and trends, that impact on service delivery to this unique population; and
  • provide administrative and supervisory leadership in the design and implementation of services for culturally and linguistically diverse and/or exceptional students.
