Studies have shown that children who are exposed to a second language and culture between the ages of 0-5 years old are more developmentally well-rounded than those who are not exposed. Answering President Obama’s call to strengthen military families, GSEHD is working with the Department of Defense (DOD) to enhance the language and cultural capabilities of children from military families with the Second Language and Culture Exposure for Children and Youth (SLCECY) Project.
The George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD) has become the new home of the Center on Education Policy (CEP), an internationally renowned source of information to guide educational improvement. She has extensive experience in all facets of education policy, research, practice and strategic planning and will join GW on June 4, 2012.
A Busy Week in American Education
Four events last week reminded me of how special this country is and how our commitment to education makes us unique in the world.
Wednesday evening I attended my synagogue’s annual Holocaust Remembrance service. The guest speaker, Irene Weiss, turned 14 in Auschwitz. She and an older sister – two of six siblings – survived through a combination of luck and love. Two aunts protected her. She made her way to America after the liberation, and lived in Virginia where eventually she became a school teacher. Asked about why she went into education, she said she went into teaching English as a second language because she thought her understanding of foreign cultures could be helpful to kids whose first language was not English. A more eloquent statement of how our system embraces difference could not be imagined.
