Under the leadership of GSEHD doctoral student Angelique Simpson-Marcus, Largo High School in Largo, Md., made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the first time ever this year. In honor of National Disability Awareness Month, Gelman Library's Diversity Group held a panel discussion event featuring guest speaker Dr. Juliana Taymans, professor of special education and director of GSEHD's transition special education program. At the event, Dr. Taymans led a panel discussion on GSEHD's Career Investigation for Transition Youth (C.I.T.Y.) Program, a partnership between the George Washington University and the Kingsbury School, a diploma-earning secondary education program for students with language-based learning disabilities. GW Higher Education Administration students had the opportunity to learn about building research agendas in student identity from a leading expert at events held on October 9 and 10. Dr. Kristen Renn, associate professor at Michigan State University, was this year's guest speaker for both the Meet the Leaders Series on the Foggy Bottom Campus and Community of Scholar-Practitioners Forum on the Virginia Campus. President Steven Knapp and The George Washington Alumni Association held the 73rd Annual Alumni Achievement Awards on October 1. Among the 2009 recipients of the Distinguished and Recent Alumni Achievement Awards was GSEHD alumna, Liz McCartney, MA 2006 (Curriculum and Instruction).
