The Educational Administration Specialization The educational administration specialization prepares leaders for advanced responsibilities within all facets of the educational arena at the local, state, national, and international levels.
The program emphasizes:
- Theoretical and practical aspects of leadership in educational organizations
- Strategic planning and program evaluation
- Social, political, and economic influences on educational organizations
- Research
This academically rigorous program brings together University- and field-based faculty with professionals who have extensive experience in local, state, national, and international level positions.
The EdD typically requires 36 credit hours of course instruction and a minimum of 12 credit hours of dissertation research. Upon approval, students may take courses offered by other programs in the school, other schools in the University, or other universities. This program emphasizes the development of original research and culminates in the writing of a scholarly dissertation that reflects research skills used throughout the program and that contributes to the body of knowledge in the student's identified area of emphasis. Dissertation work is guided and support by faculty.
The educational administration specialization is part of the educational administration and policy studies doctoral program, which prepares leaders to advance knowledge and practice for the purposes of promoting excellence, equity, and efficiency in education. Researchers and practitioners who aspire to high levels of responsibility in educational organizations will develop leadership skills through coursework, seminars, field experiences, research associations with faculty, and self-directed activities. Students are encouraged to develop special areas of leadership emphasis upon which to focus their study.
The program is nationally accredited by the State Education Agency-Board of Education of the District of Columbia and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
The University's location in the Washington, DC-metro area, as well as the heavily-populated Newport News, VA area, affords students unlimited opportunities to interact with key educational leaders and to participate in conferences, seminars, internships, and other activities uncommon at the university level.
Alumni Graduates of the program assume professional leadership positions in local, state, federal, and international, research, non-profit, and private organizations and agencies, and consulting firms where they plan, implement, evaluate, and research educational programs and initiatives.
