Reading and Literacy

Graduate Certificate

This program is designed for practicing professionals and focuses on the development of professionally committed practitioners so that they can reflect on and apply the current state of knowledge and competencies necessary for them to function effectively in reading/literacy instruction. The Program is designed to share basic best practices in reading and literacy across educational communities. It prepares educational professionals to be more effective in meeting the literacy needs of their students.

Those who complete the Certificate may potentially apply to their state education agency for credential as a Classroom Reading Teacher. This program would meet the requirements for states that authorize initial certification or recertification in Reading and, if a candidate has three years of successful teaching experience in which the teaching of reading was an important responsibility, could apply these courses to a master's degree and a reading specialist credential (a master’s degree is required in Maryland, DC and Virginia for the issuing of a reading specialist credential).
