Rehabilitation Counseling (M.A. in Ed. & H.D.)

Welcome to the Rehabilitation Counseling Program at GW!

For more than 30 years, The George Washington University's Rehabilitation Counseling Program has been a vital player in the education of rehabilitation professionals working with people who have disabilities.  Accredited by CORE, our program now offers several program options: (1) On-Campus Rehabilitation Counseling Master’s Program, (2) a Distance Education Rehabilitation Counseling Master’s Program, (3) an On-Campus Certificate Program in Job Development and Job Placement, (4) an Online Certificate Program in Job Development and Job Placement, and (5) an On-Campus Doctoral (Ph.D.) Program in Counseling with an emphasis on Rehabilitation Counseling Leadership.

Tuition assistance is available for on-campus MA and certificate programs. Research and Graduate Assistantships may also be availabl. Be sure to inquire with program personnel regarding the availability of these opportunities, and meet our Graduate Research Assistants.

Applicants are encouraged to apply online.

Our philosophy is to help prepare skillful, knowledgeable, and scholarly professionals to empower persons with disabilities to actively engage in society.

GW's program encompasses the philosophical foundations of rehabilitation; organizational structure of public, not-for-profit, and private vocational settings; individual, group, and family counseling theories; behavior and personality theory; human development; multicultural counseling; attitudinal and environmental barriers for people with disabilities; rehabilitation services; case management; medical and psychosocial aspects of disabilities; job development and placement; research methods in rehabilitation settings; and ethical standards for rehabilitation counselors.

Particularly attractive for students is the fact that our programs are located in our nation’s capital, in the midst of a rich environment for engaging in practice, research, and policy making. Perhaps our most appealing feature is the vast array of practicum and internship opportunities for our students, and the job opportunities upon graduation. Our rate of employment is 100%, with our graduates working in vocational rehabilitation agencies, private rehabilitation and counseling, schools, government, and policy settings.

We hope that you decide to join us and enjoy your graduate studies!
