GSEHD 100th Anniversary Events And Announcements
Convocation, Friday, October 15 - Celebrate a century of achievement and innovation as GSEHD turns 100 this year! The University will hold a special centennial Convocation on Friday, October 15 at 4pm in the Marvin Center Grand Ballroom, starting with an academic procession led by the GW Trustees, President Trachtenberg and Vice President Lehman. President Trachtenberg will present President’s Medals to two luminaries in the field of education: Dr. Lee S. Shulman, president of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, in honor of his lifelong commitment to teacher quality and role in establishing the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS); and Dr. Wang Shenghong, president of Fudan University in China.
Recent GSEHD alumnus and 2004 commencement speaker L. Trenton Marsh will deliver remarks, and museum education program professor emerita and renowned artist Sue Ann Robinson will present a unique piece of artwork created for the event and given to GW as a gift from museum education alumni. Faculty RSVP And Academic Procession - All GSEHD current faculty and emeriti faculty are invited to join the academic procession at the start of the convocation. Please arrive with regalia by 3:30pm on the 3rd floor of the Marvin Center (exact room # to be announced next week) for processional line-up. US Congressional Record Statement, Mayoral Proclamation, DC City Council Resolution
GSEHD’s centennial will be honored on Capitol Hill and around town on October 15. Senator Kent Conrad, (D-ND), a 1975 alumnus of GW’s School of Business and Public Management, is introducing into the Congressional Record a statement in recognition of both the 100th anniversary of GSEHD and the anniversary of the university’s name change. The D.C. Office of the Mayor is issuing a mayoral proclamation, and the D.C. City Council has voted on a resolution, both honoring GSEHD for its commitment to serving the citizens of the District of Columbia. Finally, the flag that flies over the US Capitol building on October 15 will fly in honor of the occasion.

New Directions Conference XXIX
Dean Futrell, the Alumni Council and Phi Delta Kappa invite you to discuss “Education and Human Development: Past, Present and Future” at GSEHD’s annual gathering of educators, administrators, counselors, students, parents, faculty and alumni.
The 29th annual New Directions Conference will feature keynote speaker Dr. Belle S. Wheelan, Secretary of Education for Virginia, who will address the future of schools of education, followed by strategic seminars and workshops that will further examine the significance of schools of education yesterday, today and tomorrow. The GSEHD Office of Admissions also will be holding an Open House during both Session I and II of the conference.

$5 Million Title II Teacher Quality Education Partnership Grant, "The Literacy Collaborative," Awarded to TPSE
GSEHD and TPSE were recently awarded a five–year, $5 million Teacher Quality Education Partnership grant by the US Department of Education to fund teacher preparation and literacy curriculum initiatives, entitled, “The Literacy Collaborative: Communities of Practice,” based in DC Public Schools. Along with DCPS, partners include CCAS faculty members, the DC Office of Education and private and non-profit organizations. In addition to the $4,913,725 in federal funding, matching contributions from private partners will exceed $5 million. Dr. Jay Shotel and Dr. Maxine Freund will serve as co-principal investigators.

$1.5 Million Grant for Traumatic Brain Injury Graduate Certificate Program
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs awarded TPSE a $1.5 million grant for five years to fund the traumatic brain injury graduate certificate program. Both on campus and distance learning options, as well as tuition funding, are available. Dr. Janis Ruoff will serve as principal investigator.

In2Books Collaborates With TPSE
Local literacy curriculum development organization In2Books has partnered with GSEHD’s teacher education program to help implement the In2Books curriculum in DC Public Schools. GSEHD will train and support teachers who are using the curriculum; In2Books will provide over $260,000 in funding. Dr. Jay Shotel is the principal investigator.

South Asia Teacher Training Project
A partnership among GSEHD, the Fairfax County Office for Speakers of Other Languages and the US Institute of Peace has received a $500,000, one-year grant from the State Department to explore ways to build capacity in English language instruction at the secondary level in Pakistan and India. A summer institute for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers from those countries is planned. Associate Dean Joel Gomez will serve as principal investigator.

Collaborative Vocational Evaluation Training (CVET)
The US Department of Education has awarded $499,140 to GSEHD’s Collaborative Vocational Evaluation Training (CVET) Program, which provides values-based graduate training to enhance rehabilitation, transition and employment outcomes for persons with severe disabilities. The grant is for five years, and Dr. Pam Leconte will serve as principle investigator.

Urban Initiative: Sustaining and Expanding A Professional Development School Partnership
The Urban Initiative Program received just under $95,000 from the US Department of Education to study the U.I.’s effectiveness in preparing District of Columbia teachers to use evidence-based research practices to impact student achievement. The grant is for nine months, and Dr. Juliana Taymans will serve as principle investigator.

Educational Exchange Partnership With Bangladesh
GSEHD’s international education program, in partnership with GW economics faculty, will conduct a curriculum and faculty development project with BRAC University in Bangladesh, funded by a $149,104 grant from the US Department of State. The project will improve the instructional and administrative capabilities of the Bangladesh university, and will strengthen the GW curricula in South Asian studies. Dr. James Williams is principal investigator.

U.S. Joint Urban Operations Office Archival Database
Defense industry contractor General Dynamics has awarded GSEHD’s department of educational leadership a $134,700, one-year grant to develop an unclassified archival database to support the U.S. Joint Urban Operations Office’s (JUOO) management and operational efforts. Dr. Reynolds Ferrante will serve as principal investigator.

Congratulations to Ten Prince George’s County Teachers Who Recently Earned MA’s in Early Childhood Special Education
PGCPS teachers Lyle Brown, Aubrey Lewis, Kalina Phifer, Natonya Jone, Irvin Bowden, Colleen Hughes, Chris Lehman, Darice Holmes, Helen Finney and Jen Rose became GSEHD alumni in May after participating in the four-year Elementary Special Education Partnership. All ten graduates earned MA’s in early childhood special education and received certification in special education while teaching full-time. Dr. Clyde Crosswell And Scot Holliday Present Two Papers At Two Conferences
At this year's Association of Management and the International Association of Management's 21st Annual Conference in Norfolk, VA, adjunct assistant professor Dr. Clyde Crosswell and HRD doctoral candidate and research fellow Scot Holliday presented “The Paradox of Memory: Transforming Perspectives Through Awareness.” Also this year, the pair traveled to London to present “The New Science of Awareness: Triggering the Emergence of Consciousness in Living Systems” at the 4th Annual Conference on Knowledge, Culture and Change in Organizations

Dr. Richard P. Lanthier Co-Authors Paper With Counseling Doctoral Student Craig Windham
Dr. Richard P. Lanthier collaborated with counseling doctoral candidate Craig Windham to co-author and publish “Internet Use and College Adjustment: The Moderating Role of Gender,” a look at how the extent and type of Internet use by gender affects a student’s rate of adaptation to a college setting. E-Learning Companion Receives Coverage on WAMU Public Radio and WUSA Channel 9
Washington CBS affiliate WUSA Channel 9 broadcast an interview with GSEHD’s Dr. Michael Corry on August 30 discussing The E-Learning Companion: A Student’s Guide to Online Success, the Internet-as-academic-tool guidebook he co-authored with fellow ETL professor Dr. Ryan Watkins. The book was given to each GW incoming freshman this fall with a foreward by GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg. The WUSA Tonight segment was rebroadcast on August 31. Both Dr. Corry and Watkins were guests on the Kojo Nnamdi Show on WAMU FM radio on September 21 also to promote The E-Learning Companion. WAMU broadcasts NPR programming and reaches over 450,000 listeners from its base at American University in Washington. Kojo Nnamdi has invited Corry and Watkins back in the spring to discuss the results of a planned freshman evaluation of the Companion. Dr. Ken Hergenrather To Publish Article In Spring 2005
“Identifying Factors Influencing Job-Seeking Behaviors of Persons Living with HIV/AIDS,” an employment perspective study by Dr. Kenneth C. Hergenrather, assistant professor of counseling, has recently been accepted for publication by the journal AIDS Education and Prevention. Higher Education Administration Doctoral Candidate Presents at UNCF Conference
Trenace Richardson presented, “The Significance of Spirituality in the Lives of African American Women Leaders in Education during the Civil Rights Era,” at the Frederick D. Patterson Research Conference of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) held in Washington, DC, in September. Trenace is a research associate for GSEHD’s National Clearinghouse for Comprehensive School Reform.

Educational Symposium For Research And Innovations (ESRI); Request For Proposals Deadline November 15
The 2nd annual Educational Symposium for Research and Innovation (ESRI) provides students and alumni of any GSEHD program an opportunity to present research to peers and faculty and garner instant feedback. The event, which also is a chance to network and build a resume, occurs on February 26, 2005 in the Marvin Center. National Depression Screening Day October 7 At GW’s Community Counseling Center
The public is invited to a free, anonymous mental health screening for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder as part of the annual National Depression Screening Day on October 7. GSEHD counselor interns, under the supervision of C/HOS faculty, will provide free, confidential screenings from 9am to 8pm at GSEHD, 2134 G Street, NW, room B-11. Hamilton Fish Institute Hosts National Conference October 27-29 in Washington
“Persistently Safe Schools” brings educators, researchers and parents together with public officials to discuss the most current school violence prevention research, legislation and strategies. Keynote speakers include alternative education researcher Robert Barr of Boise State University, William Modzeleski of the US Department of Education and Deborah Prothrow-Stith from the Harvard School of Public Health.
The event, which begins with a pre-conference on October 27 followed by the main conference October 28-29, costs $450 for open attendance or $50 per session. CIES Northeast Regional Conference November 12-13 at GW
The George Washington University, American University and The University of Maryland, members of the Washington Consortium for Comparative and International Education and Training, are sponsoring, “Educational and Social Transitions and Transformation,” a conference that will address how educators can prepare students for increasingly complex economic, political and socio-cultural change, and promote a connection between the global and local contexts in these areas through pedagogy and research.

GSEHD Alumna Travels To Tokyo As Japanese Education And Culture Fellow In Fulbright Memorial Fund (FMF) Teacher Program; Call For Applications, 2005
Janeece Docal, MEd ‘00, was one of 200 fellows to travel to Japan in June on a three-week tour of schools in an effort to promote greater intercultural understanding between the two countries. The US fellows, who were selected from a national pool of primary and secondary educators, met Japanese teachers, students and government officials, visited cultural sites and stayed with local families. Docal is an educator at Bell Multicultural Senior High School in northwest Washington, and can be contacted at jcdocal@hotmail.com.
The FMF Teacher Program was launched in 1997 by the Japanese government to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the US Fulbright Program, which has enabled 6,000 Japanese students to study in the US. The program sends a total of 600 US educators to Japan annually (in June, October and November); participants return to share their experience through outreach projects. The application deadline for all 2005 FMF trips is December 10, 2004. Teachers and administrators of all disciplines are encouraged to apply; previous knowledge of Japan or Japanese is not required. Former Capitals and Celtics coach, and 1941 GSEHD Alumnus, Red Auerbach Collaborates on New Book; Signing and Reception, October 29, to benefit GW Athletics.
After earning a BS in Human Kinetics and Leisure Studies, then under the GW School of Education, in 1940, and an MAT in 1941, alumnus Arnold J. “Red” Auerbach authored a handbook for how to play each of the positions in baseball, which was then adopted as a teaching tool by athletic departments at schools and universities. Auerbach went on to coach the Washington Capitals hockey team and led the Boston Celtics basketball team to nine championships. Auerbach was named NBA Coach of the Year in 1965, and won the GW Distinguished Alumni Award in 1971.
Author John Feinstein recently chronicled Auerbach’s teaching and coaching experience in a new book, “Let Me Tell You A Story—A Lifetime in the Game.” Both Feinstein and Auerbach will be on hand to discuss and autograph the biography at a dinner reception on Monday, October 25, 6:30-8pm, at the GW Smith Center, 600 22nd Street, NW.
